Lake Charlevoix is the state’s third largest inland lake with a total of 17,260 acres, located in the northern region of the Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It connects through Round Lake to the city of Charlevoix and then to Lake Michigan. An interesting historical note is that Ernest Hemingway lived on Lake Charlevoix at one time. Today, Lake Charlevoix is one of the hottest lake resorts in the country, where you’ll find an abundance of natural attractions, as well as fine dining and excellent shopping, art galleries, antique shops and clothing boutiques. Lake Charlevoix offers beautiful beaches, fishing, boating, hiking, biking, state parks and camping, and lots of golf courses. The three main beaches of the area are Lake Michigan Beach, from which one can see a lighthouse, the pier and fish hatchery. Depot Beach and Ferry Beach are located on Lake Charlevoix. Also, the Charlevoix Snowmobile Trail connects with the Jordan River State Forest Trail and also connects with the Northern Michigan Snowmobile trail network. In spite of its’ popularity, Lake Charlevoix retains an old-fashioned atmosphere with an attractive marina and tree-lined streets and Victorian architecture. Lake Charlevoix is also home to an annual Apple Festival and a Waterfront Art Fair. Also, a Venetian Festival is a weeklong affair with boat parades, Venetian games, arts and crafts and other attractions.

Lake Charlevoix Weather & Climate

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan%u2019s weather. What is known as %u201Clake effect snow squalls%u201D bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth%u2019s surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lakes also modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Summer temperatures are typically in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with cool nights. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October.
