Crooked Lake
is located in a wooded resort area of Northwest Michigan near Pickerel and Burt Lakes. Located at the west end of the lake is the village of Conway and a township park. This park offers picnicking and a nice sandy beach, with an inn located next to the beach for dining and lodging. Crooked Lake has excellent fishing for several species, including trout, pike, bass, perch and walleye, and a full service marina at Ogden services the lake. Crooked Lake is part of northern Michigan’s Inland Waterway, which is also made up of the Crooked and Indian Rivers and Burt and Mullet Lakes. Altogether they offer more than 40 miles of navigable waters. Mullet Lake is twelve miles long and is known for its water-skiing and jet skiing, while Burt Lake has 2,000 feet of sandy beaches ideal for swimming. On the south shore of Burt Lake stands the famous Cross in the Woods, carved from a giant 55-foot California Redwood. The Indian River, which connects Mullet Lake and Burt Lake, winds through wetlands full of wildlife, and is a great river for fishing and canoeing. Golf courses are located five miles from Crooked Lake, and just a short drive takes you to horseback riding, a casino or downhill skiing. Cross-country skiing is also available on trails located around the lake.

Northern Michigan has four very distinct seasons. Heavy snowfall in winter is common in the northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The Great Lakes definitely help moderate winter temperatures, but even so, the average highs in the middle of January are near 10 degrees, while the southern regions of the state see highs in the 20s. The lakeshore breezes help keep temperatures cool on summer days, and most of the time humidity is manageable. Statewide annual precipitation is around 25 inches, with higher amounts in the Upper Peninsula and along Lake Michigan. Fall is often the best time of the year with mild to cool sunny days and crisp, cold nights. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
