Good Hart is a small, historic village located on the shores of Little Traverse Bay in Northwest Michigan. This unincorporated community is supported completely by tourism and has a “downtown” area that consists of an antique store and Primitive Images (rustic and local décor) and a general store that has a unique history all its’ own. The Good Hart General Store was built in 1935 and operated as a grocery, butcher shop and gas station until 1971 when it was sold to the current owners. Today it houses a grocery, bakery and deli and post office. Many of the original features of the building remain intact, including tinted front windows, the glass-front counter bins, a 1901 National Cash Register and a carved oak “cooling case.” Good Hart lies along a stretch of scenic highway that follows the Lake Michigan shoreline. In the early 1900s, it became a thriving tourist spot, with several resorts built along the picturesque lakefront. Today, many historical markers are located along Lake Shore Drive (M-119) from Harbor Springs north to Cross Village, which mark points of interest such as “Devil’s Elbow” and “The Old Council Tree.” Just south of Good Hart is the St. Ignatius Church and Native American Burial Ground, which is on the State of Michigan’s Register of Historic Sites. Other nearby attractions include the Readmond Township Park, the Tunnel of Trees along Lake Shore Drive, Bayfront Park, and the resort towns of Harbor Springs and Petoskey.

Good Hart Weather & Climate

The Great Lakes has a big influence on the weather of northern Michigan%u2019s Upper Peninsula. This area enjoys four distinct seasons with mild, comfortable summers and cold, snowy winters. The Lakes modify summer high temperatures, keeping things from becoming too hot and humid, thus making the northern parts of the state an attractive vacation spot. Autumn is generally too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions, such as golf and boating, and for sightseeing. Fall comes early to northern Michigan and fall foliage color peaks around mid-October. The luminous Northern Lights are a spectacular phenomenon that is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October. The region surrounding the town of Charlevoix has an average of 5 days per year above 90 degrees F. and 183 days below 32 degrees F. They also receive an average of 96 inches of snowfall per year.
