Watervliet
is a small town located off I-94 south of Paw Paw Lake and near Lake Michigan. The town was founded in 1833 and its' unusual name is a Dutch term meaning "flowing water." There are lots of recreational opportunities in the Watervliet area. Paw Paw Lake is popular for its' fishing and boating, and is also the site of a beautiful golf course. Cross country skiing is available at Brookside Park, just south of Watervliet, and Hays park along the Paw Paw River and Flaherty park on Mill creek are nice picnicking spots. The town of Watervliet is also home to a popular Ice Sculpting Contest, usually held in February, and a festive Fourth of July Celebration, complete with parade and fireworks. Just southwest of Watervliet is the city of St. Joseph, which lies along the banks of the St. Joseph River overlooking Lake Michigan. This city has picturesque brick-paved roads, and a downtown region filled with art galleries, antique and gift shops, little cafes and beautiful views. There are nature trails to hike or bike, sand dunes to climb and beaches for swimming and sunbathing, boating and fishing or golf. St. Joseph is also home to festivals such as the Blossomtime Parade, the Venetian Festival and the "Antiques on the Bluff" show which is held along the tree lined Lake Bluff Park that overlooks Lake Michigan.

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
