South-Haven is a lakeside town that reminds visitors of a small picturesque New England village. It has been called one of the "best-kept secrets" in Michigan and each year more and more visitors discover this town's scenic harbor, wonderful sandy beaches and excellent boating and fishing. South Haven is located west of Kalamazoo along Interstate 196 on the banks of the Black River near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. The town has the distinction of being the "blueberry capital of the world", with the greatest concentration of high-bush blueberries to be found anywhere. There are eight city parks in South Haven and three local golf courses. Hiking, biking and cross-country skiing are popular in the Kal-Haven Trail State Park. This is a 33-mile long scenic trail that meanders through wooded areas, past rivers and streams and country farms. Lake Michigan and numerous inland lakes provide endless swimming, sunbathing and boating opportunities. And some of the best fishing for trout, perch and salmon can be found in South Haven's waterways. The town of South Haven has lots of unique shops and restaurants to explore, and there are several annual special events in town, such as the Ice Breaker in February, Harborfest in June and the All Crafts Fair Labor Day Weekend.

South Haven Weather & Climate

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
