Dowagiac
is located in Cass County in the southwest corner of Michigans Lower Peninsula, at the junction of M-51 and M-63. The population as of the 2000 census was 6,147 residents. The unusual name of the community comes from the Potawatomi Indian tribe meaning “foraging ground” or “abundance.” Dowagiac is nestled among rolling hills and is surrounded by several of the lakes of The Sister Lakes Region of southwestern Michigan. Some of those lakes include the Little Crooked, Big Crooked, Round, Cable, Dewey and Magician Lakes. Four seasons of recreational opportunities abound in Dowagiac, including swimming, boating, fishing, camping and hiking, and in the wintertime, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. Dowagiac is known as having “One of the Best Downtowns in Michigan,” and offers small town appeal with a renovated Victorian shopping district that is perfect for strolling and browsing. It also has an active arts community and is home to the Dogwood Fine Arts Festival, the Beckwith Park Summer Concert Series, the Rod and Roll Classic Car Show, as well as several other special events throughout the year. Dowagiac is only 25 miles from South Bend, Indiana and approximately 90 miles to Chicago.

Southwest Michigan enjoys four seasons with a moderate climate, surrounded by vast forests, fertile farmlands, the Lake Michigan shoreline and numerous inland lakes and rivers. Snowfall is moderate along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Heavier snowfall in the state is found in the Upper Peninsula and the upper reaches of the Lower Peninsula. The Great Lakes help moderate winter temperatures, but still, average highs in January in the southwest portion of the state can be expected to be in the 20s. Breezes along the shoreline of Lake Michigan helps keep temperatures cooler in the summertime and humidity is considered average. Statewide annual rainfall is around 35 inches, with the higher amounts in the upper regions of the state and along the Lake Michigan border.
