Pinckney
is a small town located in southeast Michigan, about 16 miles northwest of the city of Ann Arbor. It's considered a "bedroom community" for those who commute to both the greater Ann Arbor and Lansing areas. Part of Livingston County, Pinckney was the county's first permanent village, settled in 1837 as a flour mill town. Today, it bustles with traffic running through the village on Michigan Highway 36, with those visiting the nearby Pinckney State Recreational Area just to the southwest of town. This 11,000-acre recreational site includes the Silver Lake Day Use Area, the Halfmoon Day Use Facility and a modern campground. Many lakes throughout the area are perfect for fishing and boating, and a large trail system runs through the region, as well. The village of Pinckney hosts an annual Art in the Park during Memorial Day weekend that features hundreds of local artists and craftspeople that display and sell their art. There is also live music and other entertainment and lots of great food at the event. The Village Park in Pinckney is home to a USA Day Celebration on the Fourth of July each year, with live music, arts and crafts, fireworks and other daylong activities for kids and adults. Pinckney offers small town charm and old-fashioned fun for everyone in the family.

The southeast lower section of Michigan has four seasons and due to its location near Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southeastern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
