Brooklyn
is a lovely little village nestled in the heart of the Irish Hills in southeast Michigan. It is surrounded by more than fifty lakes within a ten-mile radius, giving it the slogan “Heart of the Lakes.” The town of Brooklyn itself is situated between Lake Columbia and Vineyard Lake, at the headwaters of the Raisin River, making it the perfect base for a vacation getaway. Lake Columbia is a private lake, but three other lakes in the area, Wamplers Lake, Clark Lake and Vineyard Lake, all contain parks and offer visitors a variety of recreational fun. Walter J. Hayes State Park is located at Wamplers Lake and the two other lakes contain county parks. Activities include swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, biking and golf. Come wintertime, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular sports. The Michigan International Speedway is located in the Irish Hills near Brooklyn, and other area attractions include the Prehistoric Forest, Mystery Hill and Stagecoach Stop U.S.A. The Hidden Lake Gardens is located on M-50 in the Irish Hills and includes six miles of winding, one-way road linking the different areas of interest in the gardens. There are also more than five miles of marked hiking trails in the woods and meadows of Hidden Lake Gardens. For shopping and dining needs, Brooklyn offers a downtown area, along with two mini-plazas and a shopping mall.

The southeast lower section of Michigan has four seasons and due to its location near Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms, but prolonged periods of humidity are rare. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
