Lake-Orion
was the site of a power dam, built in 1828, which united several small lakes that formed the present day mile-wide lake. The settlement on the east end of the lake was first called Canandaigua and renamed Lake Orion in 1929. The Lake Orion area became a summer resort and grew into a year-round community, which today has a permanent population of around 3,000. It is located on M-24, just north of Pontiac and about 25 miles north of Detroit. Lake Orion is part of Oakland County, which includes more than 5,600 acres of natural areas and recreational facilities. A wide variety of activities can be enjoyed in the Lake Orion area, including hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, golf, cross country skiing, ice skating and ice fishing. Other attractions in the community include the Lake Orion Art Center and Olde World Canterbury Village, which is a state designated historical site that covers over 21 acres. The Pontiac Silverdome, The Palace of Auburn Hills, Great Lakes Crossing and the new Chrysler Technical Center are just minutes away from Lake Orion.

The Southeast Lower region of Michigan has four seasons and due to its location near Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southeastern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
