Harbert
is a small village located in the southwest corner of the state along Lake Michigan’s picturesque shoreline. Scandinavian families founded the town at the turn of the 20th century, and you will find no large malls or traffic jams here, no theme parks or huge resorts. Just miles and miles of Lake Michigan beaches and lots of small town charm. Poet Carl Sandburg spent many summers in this region known as “Harbor Country” and most of his Pulitzer Prize winning account of Abraham Lincoln was written at his Harbert home. Two major public beaches are in the area – at New Buffalo at the southern end of the region and on the northern end is Warren Dunes State Park Beach. Rated among Michigan’s top beaches, Warren Dunes has 1,950 acres with many easy access points and is unspoiled by commercial development. Outdoor activities in the area include swimming, canoeing and kayaking, fishing and boating, backroads biking and hiking. Winter is just as active as summer, with miles of well-marked snowmobile trails starting at Highway 39 in New Buffalo, as well as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice-skating. Just a short drive from Harbert, the majestic sand dunes and woodlands give way to rolling hills and lush vineyards. Many award-winning wineries in the region are open for tours and special wine taste events. In addition to all of this, there are many festivals and special community events held in the Harbert area throughout the year.

Southwest Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, %u201Cif you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D This is because both the warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic influence the climate. Located near the shores of Lake Michigan, the climate is also influenced by the lake effect, which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow squalls" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
