Lake Leelanau is a small community located in the northern region of the Lower Peninsula, right at the point where Lake Leelanau joins Lower Leelanau Lake. This region is within twenty minutes of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and just north of Grand Traverse Bay. Lake Leelanau is known for its’ fishing and boating opportunities, with numerous other recreational activities available in the area such as hiking and biking, canoeing, skiing and golf. Lake Leelanau lies in the heart of Michigan’s picturesque wine country, with award-winning wineries and vineyards sprinkled among herb farms, orchards and quaint fishing villages. Just north of Lake Leelanau is the village of Leland and its’ 100-year-old Fishtown. This “village within a village” features a wide variety of gift shops, antique stores, restaurants and galleries, along with all kinds of fresh and smoked fish. Charter boat-fishing trips and excursions are also available in Leland to the Manitou Islands. Many festivals and special events are held in the Lake Leelanau region, as well, such as the original Fiber Festival in Leland, which is an art show that features works in mediums of paper, clothing, tapestry, weaving, quilts and more. A National Polka Festival is held each year in the neighboring town of Cedar, and the annual Fishtown Wine and Food Festival is usually held in June.

Lake Leelanau Weather & Climate

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
