Cedar
is a small town located in Leelanau County in the northwestern region of the state, just north of Traverse City near the Grand Traverse Bay. This region is a well-known recreational resort area, home to Lake Leelanau, which is connected to Lower Leelanau Lake by a short stream. The community of Cedar is located just west of the southern tip of Lower Leelanau Lake. “The Good Harbor Area,” as it is called, served as an early haven for ships seeking shelter from Lake Michigan during storms. Today the Leelanau area is packed with attractions and recreational opportunities for visitors. There are charter boats for fishing, boating, swimming, sailing, and hiking and biking, wilderness canoe trips and lots of golf. Leelanau County is also home to the Sleeping Bears Dunes National Lakeshore, which encompasses 35 miles of gorgeous rocky coastline, beaches, dunes and ancient glacial formations. Other nearby attractions include Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum, the Empire Historical Society Museum, Leland Fishtown and Good Harbor Bay. The village of Cedar is home to an annual National Polka Festival, and its’ other claim to fame is for being the hometown of Ray Pleva, the creator of “Plevalean,” a delicious combination of sausage and cherries.

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
