Kalkaska
is located in the northwestern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, and is know throughout the state for their annual National Trout Festival, held the last weekend of April. It is the county seat of Kalkaska County, along US Highway 131 on the banks of the Boardman River and near Crawford and Round Lakes. Kalkaska is a small town, but the Pere Marquette State Forest covers much of the county of Kalkaska, and along with the many lakes and streams in the area, makes it a very desirable vacation spot. The village of Kalkaska is home to most of the county events, including the annual county fair, and there are a large number of hotels, motels and seasonal cabins available for tourists visiting the area. The natural terrain of the area is heavily wooded with small farms and villages, and numerous rivers and lakes provide swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, and almost any other kind of water related sport. And, the Skegemog Lake Pathway in Kalkaska County is one of the most picturesque trails in Michigan for hiking. For wintertime fun, Kalkaska has a snowmobile staging area with a warming station. This is connected to a state maintained trail system with hundreds of miles of snowmobiling trails. Although Kalkaska is relatively isolated, it is served by several state and federal highways, making it easily assessable.

Four distinct seasons with a lake effect that is quite strong during much of the year describes the climate of the northern region of Michigan%u2019s Lower Peninsula. The lake effect increases cloudiness and snowfall during late fall and winter, and also modifies the temperatures %u2013 keeping them cooler in the summer. The weather in the Great Lakes region is known for being very changeable. An old saying goes, %u201CIf you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D The %u201CChain of Lakes Region%u201D in northwest Michigan sees a lot of moisture throughout the year in the form of showers and thunderstorms during the summer and snow and ice during the winter. In winter, the humidity from the lake condenses as snow when it reaches land, creating quite heavy snowfalls in some areas. During the winter, the temperature of the lakes continues to drop, and ice sometimes covers portions of the lakes. Summers are warm, but periods of extreme heat and humidity are infrequent.
