Gladwin is a charming small town located in central Michigan along the Cedar River. It started as a lumber mill town during the lumber boom of 1875 and has grown slowly over the years. Today mainly tourism and small manufacturing companies support it. There are several lakes and streams near Gladwin, as well as a large pond just northwest of town. It is also just a 15-minute drive to the city of Harrison, which bills itself as “Twenty Lakes in Twenty Minutes.” Some of the activities in the area include swimming, fishing, boating and even snorkeling in one of the many beautiful lakes in the area, or tubing and kayaking along the Muskegon or Tobacco Rivers. The surrounding woodlands are full of wildflowers and wild life, making it popular with photographers. And, nearby Wilson State Park offers hiking and camping opportunities. You can explore the area’s small towns, antique shops, and shop for Amish quilts, furniture and other handmade items. Fall is a good time to drive the country roads, when the surrounding countryside is ablaze with color, and wintertime brings cross country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and ice fishing. There are several fairs and festivals held in the towns surrounding Gladwin, including the Morel Mushroom Festival that is held every May in Harrison and the Frostbite Open Golf Outing in February on Budd Lake.

Four distinct seasons with a lake effect that is quite strong during much of the year describes the climate of the northern region of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The lake effect increases cloudiness during late fall and winter, and also modifies the temperatures - keeping them cooler in the summer. Michigan sees a lot of moisture throughout the year. In winter, the humidity from the lake condenses as snow when it reaches land, creating quite heavy snowfalls in some areas. Also, during the winter, the temperature continues to drop, and ice sometimes covers portions of the lakes. Summers are warm, but periods of extreme heat and humidity are infrequent. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer and early fall is often the driest, sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
