Allegan
is a peaceful town of approximately 4,000, located in southwest Michigan in central Allegan County. It serves as the county seat and is the largest city in the county. The town of Allegan is situated on scenic Lake Allegan, which was created by a dam on the Kalamazoo River. It has a lovely, historic downtown area that includes a variety of small shops and restaurants in an elegant Victorian setting. The waterfront in Allegan has a winding boardwalk and park that has a nice view of the Old Iron Girder Bridge. Michigan statesman and historian, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, named this historic little town after the Alleghen Indian Tribe in 1837. It was officially organized as a village in 1838 and incorporated as a town in 1907. Paw Paw River, 3 Mile and Paw Paw Lakes are located nearby and outdoor activities in the area include swimming, fishing, boating, sailing, hiking, biking and golf. Local events include the Allegan County Fair and a special 4th of July Celebration. The picturesque village of Bloomingdale is nearby and is situated on the Kal-Haven Trail, which is a paved hiking trail that stretches from Kalamazoo to South Haven and is part of Michigan’s Rails-to-Trails State Park System.

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
